Bruce
Bowens is a graduate of the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology where
he earned both a Fashion Design Degree, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree
in Apparel Production Management. He was born in Utica, New York, (1 of 15 children)
was educated in Utica local schools, and moved to New York City to pursue his
passion for knowledge and learn the craft of fashion design.
His first post-graduation job was working for a children’s sportswear firm, designing the Head Sport tennis line. He later moved on to work for Aileen Sportswear (a missy knit company), where he developed his skills as a missy cut-and-sew knitwear designer. Bruce eventually landed a position at a Junior denim sportswear company called “Don’t Stop”. Here, Bruce was able to master his technique for zeroing in on trends, and bringing up-to-the moment looks to a young fashion-savvy consumer. It was at “Don’t Stop” where Bruce caught the attention of Fashion editors, who began featuring his work in their publications. Bruce’s designs have been featured in Seventeen Magazine, Sportswear International, Vogue, Teen, and Elle. His clothes has graced the bodies of model/actresses Reese Witherspoon, Krissy Taylor, Liv Tyler and Natalie Portman to name a few. Natalie Portman was featured on the cover of Seventeen Magazine wearing one of Bruce’s jacket designs. He has also been interviewed by Ananda Lewis for a special segment on designers for the B.E.T. television network.
In addition to his background as a junior sportswear designer, for the last 15 years Bruce has always maintained his special talent for creating one of a kind dresses - particularly wedding gowns. Wedding Gowns has been a particular favorite for Bruce ever since his childhood. As a child he would take his sister’s Barbie dolls and dress them up in different outfits, but most importantly dressed them in wedding dresses.
Bruce was asked to design his first wedding gown 15 years ago when a friend was frantic about finding something that was suited to her taste. After going through all the bridal magazines, shopping all of the New York bridal showrooms, she felt there was nothing available that spoke specifically to her... her body type, her sense of style, or her personal feeling of “something special”. That’s when she consulted Bruce, and he created sketches to show her what would look good for her body type.....And that became Bruce’s premise for creating one of a kind wedding gowns for every bride since. Bruce has created wedding gowns for women of every size, shape, and color. Always addressing the needs of that particular body type, and that particular bride. His hallmark has been, and continues to be, focusing on you........the Bride.
